As a family photographer on Oʻahu, I've spent countless mornings and evenings exploring the island's most beautiful locations. Here are some of my favorite spots for family photos, along with tips on choosing between a sunrise or sunset session.
Why Lighting Matters More Than Location
Before talking about specific locations, it's important to understand that lighting often has a bigger impact on your photos than the location itself.
The soft, golden light that occurs shortly after sunrise and before sunset creates flattering skin tones, beautiful colors, and a dreamy feel that simply isn't possible during the middle of the day. This is why most professional photographers schedule sessions during these times.
When deciding between sunrise and sunset, consider your family's schedule, your children's temperament, and the type of scenery you love most.
Sunrise Sessions on Oʻahu
Sunrise sessions are often my top recommendation for families with young children.
Mornings tend to be cooler, less crowded, and calmer. Beaches are often nearly empty, allowing for cleaner backgrounds and a more relaxed experience. The light at sunrise is soft and gentle, creating bright, airy images that feel peaceful and timeless.
Many toddlers and babies are also happiest in the morning, making it easier to capture genuine smiles and natural interactions.
Kāhala Beach
For families looking for a quieter beach location, Kāhala offers a beautiful mix of palm trees, sandy shoreline, and gentle morning light.
The atmosphere feels relaxed and intimate, making it ideal for young families, maternity sessions, and multi-generational portraits. It's also ideal for anyone staying in town (Honolulu/Waikiki).
Sunset Sessions on Oʻahu
Sunset sessions create a completely different feel.
The warm golden tones, dramatic skies, and colorful sunsets can add incredible depth and emotion to your photos. If your family loves vibrant colors and that iconic Hawaiian sunset glow, evening sessions may be the perfect fit.
The tradeoff is that beaches are often busier, and younger children can sometimes be tired by the end of the day.
Ko Olina Lagoons
Ko Olina is one of the most popular sunset locations on Oʻahu for good reason.
The calm water, palm trees, and west-facing shoreline provide some of the island's best sunset views. During the evening, the sky often lights up with shades of orange, pink, and purple.
This location works especially well for families wanting a polished, resort-style backdrop.
Mountain and Tropical Locations
Not every family wants beach photos, and that's one of the things I love about Oʻahu.
The island offers lush green mountains, tropical forests, and scenic overlooks that create a completely different look.
Locations near the Koʻolau Mountains can provide dramatic backdrops and rich greenery that feel almost cinematic. These spots often photograph best during sunrise or on lightly overcast days when the light is soft and even.
If you want something unique that stands out from traditional beach portraits, a mountain location may be the perfect choice.
How to Choose the Right Location
When helping families choose a location, I usually ask a few simple questions:
Do you prefer mountains, beach, or a combination of both?
Are your children typically happier in the morning or evening?
Do you love bright, airy images or warm, golden tones?
Do you want a quieter location or don't mind sharing space with other beachgoers?
The answers usually point us toward the perfect location and session time.
My Recommendation for Families with Young Children
If you're unsure whether to book a sunrise or sunset session, I generally recommend sunrise for families with babies and toddlers.
The beaches are quieter, temperatures are cooler, and children are often in a better mood earlier in the day. The result is a more relaxed experience and photos that feel natural and joyful.
That said, if your family loves sunsets and your kids tend to do well in the evening, sunset sessions can produce some of the most breathtaking images Oʻahu has to offer.
